Best Game EVER EVER
I've had this game a couple of years and it is by Far the Best video game experience I've had. I still play it! This is a game where you can finish the main quest and can and will want to continue on playing. The only drawback is that there is not more! When will this company get back to elder scrolls?????? Fallout is really good but it feels like filler before the next Elder Scrolls comes around...

New Favorite
It's a Bethesda Softworks RPG for XBOX 360... Should I really have to write anything else? The game is landmark for the console and should be on everyone's list. Games are beginning to outclass this one in terms of graphics, etc. but the game itself is still solid and a lot of fun to play. The explorable areas are practically endless and the environment is truly beautiful and wandering aimlessly can be as much fun as pursuing the many quests available in the game. If you like RPG's, or are already familiar with Elder Scrolls titles like Morrowind, you should not even be reading this - buy the game!

Wow you have no idea what your dealing with here...
First of all you haters can go die in a fire. You can't call yourself an RPG fan and not like this game. Second of all DON'T listen to some of these other guys. Are you an RPG fan? Do you like medevil stuff? IF SO THEN THIS IS THE GAME FOR YOU!!! It's pure PWNAGE!!!!!!

Fun game
Great controls in this game. There are so many different things you can do and the controls are set up very well for a real-time RPG on a console.

There are so many ways you can replay this game with different character types. It is not linear by any means, but can be if you want it to. It's entirely up to how you want to play. It really sets the bar for other games of this type in many ways. The world is giant. There are so many places to go and missions to accomplish. It's crazy.

There is one big problem I see with this game: The creatures you fight get tougher as you advance in level. This is a real deterrent to making you want to level up. Imagine fighting a wolf as a new level 1 character with no problem and then getting to level 7 and having the same wolf easily kill you. As you gained 6 levels and all the experience and skills that go along with them, the wolf gets equally tough. How does a wolf train to become equally better? Does the wolf go to jujitsu school??? So as you advance, it becomes increasingly tougher just to get to your next mission location because a wolf comes up and bites you from behind and you're outta there. A wolf should not gain experience the way your character does. In just about any RPG, the wolf would maintain its level of difficulty and as you get better, killing a wolf becomes like squashing an ant. I can accept tougher creatures as you advance (ie demons, dragons, the undead, etc...), but not wolves getting tougher.

Anyhow, if you advance too quickly, the game becomes impossible. It's easier to play all the way through without advancing beyond level 3. But then you don't get to learn and use all the skills of the higher level characters. As a result, the game can become somewhat repetitive.

I heard this problem is remedied in Fallout (which uses the same game system).

In the next Oblivion, fixing this issue alone will make it so no RPG can touch it (unless someone comes up with an MMORPG version of Oblivion for the 360). But until then, it's not the greatest.

does this game really suck THIS BAD???
i've "played" this game for about 3 hours now (walking around killing wolves, digging through dungeons). yeah, it's early, but i won' tbe giving it much more attention if it doesn't get a WHOLE LOT better. i'm running around outside kvtach doing a little sword dance against tan pooh colored pointy eared guys and i can't even tell if i'm hitting them or not. they're hitting me though. load times SUCK, graphics (animations) suck, i can't be bothered with the lame-assed story line cuz i'm so fed up from the rest of the crapiness, and i had to go through shopping at Gamestop to get this ("do you have a card? wanna be a memeber? want insurance? i beat this game in two days. the best part was..."),i'd think this was a complete scam if so many people weren't over the moon about this game. what am i missing? the good news is i'm not bummed about getting th regular version now since i'll hardly be wasting any more time on this one. neat red sky though. pfft. rip off.

Oblivion
This is a very good game. It has many levels of gameplay. You can stick to the main course and the obvious plot, but you can also play many lengthy side missions, and overall it is a well thought out game.

Seriously Fun Game
I was looking for a reasonably priced game that was like the original Zelda (I'm old). This is so much more than that. I found it on Amazon for under and a rating of over 4 stars. Best I've ever spent on a game! My husband and I fight over who's turn it is to play each night.

Plan on spending a lot of time
I was actually excited when I first bought this game, as I have enjoyed games similar to this in the past. I was extremely dissappointed when I played, as it's very boring to get going and there's a monotony of tedious things to do. I played for 3 days and have not gotten anywhere, except for finding some gold pieces. I battled a couple of minor things to at least do something, but didn't get much for it.

The worst part is there are so many things to choose from when creating and advancing your character throughout the game. Each option is too spread out and makes it difficult to decide on and hone any certain type of character, especially at the beginning when it's impossible to know what type of character you would want to have in the game.

I think this is a game geared towards a very specific market and not for just any gamer.

FALSE ADVERTISEMENT
Ok so is you play OBLIVION you know that the goty edition has a bug(Cure Vapirism-Bloodgrass), and the only way to solve this problem is to play the orginal elders scroll IV:Oblivion(Not game of the year edition). So i found this product, they clearly sold me this product, advertising that it was the original elders scroll. So i purchased it. THe item came 2 days later...and in the package was the game of the year edition which i already have. So the did a number on me. Make sure when purchasing this item you confirm with the retailer that it is in fact the original elders scroll:Oblivion(not game of the year edition). I had to get mine from GAMESTOP. I tried contacting them, but its been 3 weeks and i havent received and email from them yet. HOwever the product was BRAND NEW, FACTORY SEAL, and was amazing for its price. I still however wouldnt buy from them.

no 3rd person view
i only rated one star because I didn't play it much yet because it is in first person view. I had read on line that you could switch to third person. now I hear that is only after you have beaten the game. grrrrrr. I do intend to try to make myself enjoy first person, but i don't know if that will fly. If I would have known this game was in first person view i never would have bought it.

Best Game Out There for Xbox 360
It's been a while since I played a game that I wanted to play for as many (hundreds of)hours as I spent on this game. It is extremely immersive, so much so that the interaction with the hundreds of different characters during the dozens of different quests seem very lifelike, and are enjoyable, even after several weeks of play. I'm slower than the average gamer, so I like to take my time exploring the world. This game offers a massive map to explore, and its fun to steal items from houses you break into. There are several different guilds you can join and reach the higher ranks as you progress through the various challenges. My only complaint was that the Oblivion, otherworld, component of the game was a bit tedious -- with many, similarly constructed towers with the same demons inside to be slayed. But that is a minor complaint and doesn't detract much from my overall opinion of the game, which is very positive.

Best Game Ever Made
After buying this game, I did not leave my room for weeks. There's so much to do. So many choices to make. I have to admit, I was a little addicted. I can't wait for the next one to come out. I will probably lose another few weeks of my life, but it's well worth it!

Huge but tedious
My title says it all. This game is huge but the repetative nature of the tasks makes it tedious. If you've played other Eldar Scroll games before, you know what your getting. The graphics are ok but I've seen better.

BEST GAME EVER!
I've played quite a few games over the years. I always like to play games from beginning to end and do everything possible within the game. I have started and finished this game twice and have NEVER done everything in the game. There are SO MANY dungeons, caves, ruins, towns, and so much more!

The only thing I have a problem with is that there are a few game-crashing glitches. Just be sure to save often and give your XBOX a rest every 12 hours or so. Haha.

QUIT YOUR JOB AND BUY OBLIVION!!!

Epid game
I got this game a year ago from amazon and I still havn't beat it. There are still load and loads of quests to do, and places to discover. The standalone has 100+ hours of gameplay and the expansion ( comes with it) adds about 25 - 30 hours more! Great for the adventurers. The quests are like small stories, each one is different and requires you to do different things. The only downside is that the game is too long for me and I won't be able to beat it because Im always busy.
You can choose which class you want to be and which skills you want to specialize in, such as warrior, one handed swords. Or you can make your own class and choose the pros and cons of it.

Although there are many ways to kill enemies, the game play, especially on the main quest, can get a little repetitive. So if you are into long games this is the best one out there ( along with fallout 3, which was developed by the same company)

As Addicting as Oblivion
Finally got the expansion pack thanks to a buddy and I seem to spend all my off-time in the Shivering Isles. As addicting as the original game, but with more challenging creatures to beat and new objects to find/collect/use. I've just started, and the missions seem a little sparse, but then again, I have not scoped the entire isles. The missions do seem to take on a darker side and things are definitely more crazy than before! Big recommendation for your Fantasy RPG-nerd!

An occasionally annoying distraction from the main game
I got this expansion as part of the Game of the Year edition of Oblivion. I was highly skeptical of what I saw as basically a completely different reality world opposite of Cyrodill, and as such I put it off for maybe a year before deciding to enter with my new character.

Please note that I am an obsessive-compulsive person, with a sick need for organization, decisiveness, and something else I forgot.

As such, imagine how horribly I'd be set off upon discovering that you can apparently enter NOT two different worlds, but two different versions of the SAME world; Mania and Dementia. This set me off big-time because you can pretty much only enter it once, unless you want to fast-travel back to the gate just to re-enter. What makes it worse is that I see absolutely no difference between the two upon entering, making me wonder what the hell is the purpose of lying to us by making it seem like two separate worlds, when really the northern part is all Mania, and the southern part is all Dementia.

While it was a novel idea to have everyone be either arrogant or insane, but this idea's brilliance never left the paper it was written on as everyone, as in the base game, is STILL only voiced by the same three or four voice actors, all doing as spectacularly lazy a job as they did in the base game. So instead of hearing something that brings memories of Heath Ledger's Joker or Jack Nicholson's Jack Torrance, you get a decidedly lazy-sounding voice actor reading gibbering nonsense off a script with only a slight hint of understanding that they are supposed to be playing a crazy person, and not just recording Line 4,056 out of 11,100.

That slight hint immediately gets vanquished if you have the Game of the Year edition, or the other expansion pack, and you ask them about Anvil, in which they suddenly go from insane to sane, to repeat to you the same pre-recorded line about hearing about the butcher of the Anvil priests and the prophet of doom---despite the realm of the Shivering Isles being like a completely different dimension from Cyrodill, where people supposedly never really venture out, and very few Cyrodill people venture in.

Then the Prince of the realm, despite the energy and enthusiasm of his voice actor, was very poorly written. He immediately starts at a level of "I'M CRAZY YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA~!" and never once comes down from that level of such upfront and bluntly beating-over-the-head "weirdness" that he never once comes off as crazy, but just as someone trying much too hard to seem crazy, and utterly failing to elicit more than just a "well, he's weird" reaction. Subtlty is completely ejected from this role, as clearly whoever wrote the character did absolutely no research on mental illnesses, and never saw movies like "The Shining" or "One Flew Over the Cookoo's Nest" or "12 Monkeys". They just went straight for shock value, and as many references to playing with the player's intestines as possible.

The world itself looks new and original and weird, but the Dementia part, once you get past the giant mushrooms and craggly trees, you realize it looks like a putrid dump. The city of Crucible can best be described as "rotting garbage crafted into shapes", as everything is a shade of gray and garbage-green as to be more at home in Fallout 3 (also by Bethesda) or a Russian warzone in Call of Duty 4. It's such an unpleasant appearance that it nearly drove me mad for a few minutes.

The Duchess of Dementia made me do a quest called "Conspiracy" in which I had to torture random denizens of Crucible to find evidence of a fake conspiracy because she's a paranoid idiot who becomes sane long enough to tell me I should visit Anvil for more information on the Prophet. I spent an entire in-game day hunting down people and torturing them numerous times just to get somethign other than "I don't know anything!" and I grew so utterly insane I began torturing people endlessly for no reason other than I began to hate all of them with their stiff, poorly-acted voices, and I became immensely angry upon discovering (with the help of an online walkthrough) that the very first person I had tortured (and apparently let off too early) was the only one who could advance the quest by giving me some information.

I lost it, broke into houses, stole stuff, beat people up on the streets, killed several guards, and eventually died and had to re-load to my last save.

On the other spectrum, Bliss is much more pleasant, and Mania has pretty fireflies that drop sprinkly lights from them as they fly, and not all the people are piss-poor caricatures of insanity.

On the whole, the expansion pack is little more than more of the same as you get in the main game's quests, with the only real "new" things being new enemies, new weapons/armor/items, and a new landscape. Everything else is pretty much exactly the same.

Worth 30 more hours for 30 dollars? No. Though definitely worth picking up free when included with the Game of the Year edition of Oblivion.

This is a great add-on to Oblivion
The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion is my favorite game, and The Shivering Isles add-on is a must have to add additional quests and content. I would highly recommend this add-on for game enthusiasts. Another great add-on for this game is Knights of the Nine.

A good expansion back
I loved oblivion besides everything bad about it so I had to get the expansion. The world created is beautiful like always. This expansion will add a pleasurable experience that you will remember.

Sheogorath is hilarious!
The Shivering Isles creates a new world for you to explore, with new monsters, new ingredients to try out at alchemy, a schizophrenic world to explore, and as part of the storyline you'll get a cool two-in-one sword, the Dawnfang/Duskfang. Plus the character of Sheogorath, the Prince of the realm, is what was missing in Oblivion proper: a fun and engaging NPC with bucketloads of personality! The only NPC worth mentioning in Oblivion was the emperor (Patrick Stewart); all the other NPCs were flat and boring. Bethesda apparently read my mind and crafted a delightfully deranged character with the accent to match.

And the whole ironic storyline, in which you fight to defend madness against the encroaching forces of order, is wonderfully and hilariously sarcastic. I have to admit, after playing Oblivion for 200 plus hours, the game was starting to feel stagnant, and installing this expansion pack was the perfect swift kick to my rear end that I needed.

Bethesda has also done a great job designing the look of the environment itself; when you're in the Mania half of the world, the environment is full of splashy, vibrant colors, like you're high or something (is it a coincidence there are so many mushrooms around?). And in Dementia, the world is appropriately bleak, with nothing but browns and grays and blacks, with dead, twisted trees and swamps. It reminded me of being in an asylum or something (well, an outdoor asylum).

The Shivering Isles is a great expansion to a great game. Definitely worth your money.

Oblivion
This game is tons of fun, the world is just huge and there is so much to do in it

oblivion effin roxx
Oblivion is an awsome, a definite must have for anybody who even alittle bit interested. Im not getting into details because i dought this will be read but i give it a 5 out of 5, I mean like 4 years playing the game has to be worth something.

John
This video game is nice. There are many different races you can choose from and lots of land to explore. The fighting is nice as well it is a lot like FallOut without the VATS which was my favorite part of the game. Other then that awesome!

Close the gates of Oblivion (and have a heck of a lot of fun doing it)!
I bought Oblivion as one of the first games for my PS3, and I have played it many, many times more than any of the (many) other games I've also bought for it (as well as got the PC version). I'm not sure if it's a fair statement to say it's one of the best games ever made, but it certainly is one of the best-extended play games ever made. You can spend oodles and oodles of time on this game, only to come back and spend more some other time (don't ask how I know this :P). Furthermore, much of the game is open-ended, so you can decide what you want to do. Will you be a ruthless assassin, a cunning thief, a skilled mage, a powerful fighter, or a rogue bandit or adventurer? Even after you complete the main quest (more on this later), you can continue with the other quests and continue to play; the game ends when you shut the machine off (or fail the main quest). Also, there are so many options for every quest that you'll likely find yourself with multiple characters to try out the various possibilities; and, even if that didn't appeal to you, you'll probably want to experiment with the various skill sets and races.
The gameplay is solid first/third person action. You use medieval weaponry, can ride horses (but not fight while mounted), explore a huge map and find hidden caves, mines, etc., fight mythic monsters and demigods, interact with NPC's in a fairly wide range of ways, etc. There are a few bugs, but not too many - and, if you get this for the PC, you can get all of the patches (otherwise, you have to use a work-around). For console players, this game is very easy to control (I prefer the PS3 controls to PC controls, although you have quite a few more options with the PC version), which, compared to some other console games, is a great relief. For gameplay, I would rate this 3 to 4 stars. For addictiveness and fun, I would rate it 5.
The graphics are probably a 4; there are some major problems with realism in some areas, but the world is so gorgeous, and the customizable characters so visually interesting, that for visual appeal (rather than necessarily technical perfection), I give it a 4.
As far as actual storyline and storyline of the major and minor quests, I would rate this game about 3 stars; there is nothing terribly original or unique about it, and it is often predictable. There are moments of great cleverness and wit, and occasional touches of brilliance. The problem - which is, in other respects, a great feature - is that there is simply so much; since the majority is mediocre, though, the great is sort of lost in the fray.
After a very lucky encounter with the Emperor (lucky, because it gets you out of prison), the player sets off on a quest to stop the assassins who murdered the royal family and find the lost heir to the throne. You discover a daedric prince and his minions behind it all, and you must lead the heir to victory. Many of the tasks along the way (particularly in the middle, where it starts to feel like "filler") are very mundane and tiresome, but most are fun. You traverse the empire, finding pieces of the puzzle, uncovering mysteries, felling baddies, enlisting aid, etc., until at last the empire is safe. It's not a stellar story-line, but it's solid and interesting enough, and ends in a cool way - leaving the door open for an interesting part 5.
I would rate the various major sub-quests (the guild related ones) between 2 and 4. The thieves guild would be a 3 or 4, as would the Dark Brotherhood, while the mages' and fighter's guild quests would be 2's or 3's. Perhaps it's the appeal of sneaking about and being mischievous - and staying alive while doing it; or maybe it's the monotonous beginning of the mages' and fighter's guild (run-around quests, like killing rats and collecting mushrooms; doing "chores" for the various guilds, etc.); but, however that may be, they are good quests, but not my favorite. They earned a lower rating not really for storyline (they're all moderately interesting and about the same as far as originality goes), but for appeal. As far as the stories themselves: for the Mages' Guild, you must defeat the a powerful necromancer and assume leadership of the Mages' Guild; for the Thieves' Guild, you must remove the curse of the Gray Fox and assume leadership of the guild; for the Fighter's Guild, you must discover the (terrible) source of power of a rival group, and destroy it; for the Dark Brotherhood, you must uncover a traitor and assume leadership of the group.
As far as the the add-on packs (Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine); they're about the same, rating wise, with their own hosts of pluses and minuses, but they add so much to the "world" that they are well worth playing at least once.
Despite some of the lower individual ratings, I think overall this game is 5/5 because of its sheer enjoyability. It isn't perfect, but it's very good and exceptionally fun; and that's all that's needed imho. :-)

best RPG thus far
I read the written & video reviews and have not bee disappointed. I really enjoy this game...I do get a bit frustrated at times between the main & side quests..but it does make me addicted to the game even more. i hope there will be more from this maker (oblivion 5 maybe) to take it up a few more notches!

The enegizer bunny of video games
Oblivion is one of the most visually appealing games I have played. There are so many quests and challenges, so many different ways to play, I have never been bored. And, if that isn't enough, there are tons of mods available that add quests, change the look and play of the game, and add or change items. This game just goes on forever!

Game of the Year for a good reason
Even though this game is a few years old, it still delivers. The story line is original, and the interface is fairly easy to use. Some of the characters are a little flat, but that is to be expected in a game of this magnitude. The first person view really puts you in the action, but the camera can pull back to over-the-shoulder or full third person, and anywhere in between. The expansion packs are a great addition as well, especially after you've played through the main story and conquered all the dungeons, but still want more. The side quests are interesting and engaging, and it is not necessary to play them in order or in tandem with the main quests. There are also cheats and shortcuts for those that like to do things the easy way(like me). There are hundreds of hours of gameplay available, so needless to say, my wife hates it. All in all, this is a fantastic single player fantasy RPG, and I thoroughly enjoyed every sword swinging minute.

Oblvion Game of the Year
Of all of the RPGs I've played, Oblivion is certainly one of the best. Don't get me wrong, it has its problems. But the graphics and the sheer amount of content alone is enough to make up for just about all of these. Oblivion is fantastic for first time RPers because its interface is simple to use and it pretty much spells out everything for you. The fast travel system is very convenient for those of us who remember Morrowind and having to trek all across the landscape just to find some well-hidden cave in the middle of a blighted mountain. And if you don't want to fast travel, the landscape has enough depth that you can explore it without getting tunnel vision.

The main quest is fairly in-depth, yet still easy enough that any new comer could navigate through it. While most of the guild quests could do with a little fleshing out, there are enough of them to keep you occupied for several more hours. There are also plenty of side quests to complete, and a ton of little secrets to find if you feel like investigating the in-game world hard enough.

The Game of the Year Edition offers both the Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine add ons. Shivering Isles is like another main quest in and of itself. It offers hours of gameplay and an entire new world to explore, every bit as in-depth as the original one. Knights of the Nine is a nice little distraction if you're stuck on some other quest and adds a ton of benefits to your character if you complete it.

There are a few bugs to work through, but luckily the official patch fixes most of them. The voice acting is in need of a huge overhaul, and gets incredibly annoying at times, but can be ignored once you get used to it. Another annoying detail is the constant popping up of quest dialog boxes that tell you where to go at each turn. While useful for extremely inexperienced players, it does tend to get tiresome after you've become comfortable with the game.

That's where the benefit of the PC version comes in. While the console versions are great, the PC version has the option of being modded. There is a mod out there to change just about every aspect of the game, and most of them are fairly easy to install and manage. Oblivion has a great support community out there of people who are willing to help you out with any problems you have and guide you through your modding process, and gameplay in general. While the PC version has some pretty hefty operating requirements, it's certainly worth the hassle in order to be able to create a game entirely to your own liking.

If you're looking for a game that's enjoyable and immersive, Oblivion GOTY is a good pick, whether it's on the PC or console.

Oblivion and Shivering Isles
This is one of the greatest games ever made. I ordered it and expected arrival in about a week. I think it arrived in two days. It was bought used, but was in great condition and could have passed for new. I am very happy with the seller and the game itself. Both exceeded my expectations!

Great Game!!! Enough with Securom!!!
I am a huge fan of the series (The Elder Scrolls) and the company who makes it (Bethesda). The game itself has the scope and maturity that should be expected of games. That coupled with an amazing mod community makes this game a treasure regardless of age. (HUGE replay factor).

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR:
What I don't appreciate is the malware "Securom" installing itself without letting me know (I wouldn't have bought the game despite my love for the series if I had). Then demanding that I have the CD in the drive to UNINSTALL the game. What exactly is accomplished by this? My drive is full, I could reclaim 10+ gigs of my drive for other purposes but I can't because I sent my CD out of state (moving) thinking I wouldn't need it and won't be able to pick it up for months. I fully admit that it's a tame implementation compared to other hack jobs (i.e. Bioshock and install limits) but I can't help but take a hard line on the subject after the mistreatment of customers and I feel that the gaming community should do the same.

I don't support piracy in an of itself. But why should anyone be surprised when these completely ineffective methods of "protection" are cracked within days of release (if not sooner) and in the end just nitpick the legitimate users with problems. Oh, and then do us the favor of tacking the cost of this "protection" onto those users who buy. Good grief!

On the one hand, I highly recommend this game. But on the other (because of the complete and utter lack of listening to the community on this subject) I say be very weary of games that sneak in "protections" rather than connect with the fans. We want to pay for the content we enjoy!
