A good compilation with some overlap and a few missing games.
I have to be honest, I have very fond memories of the Sega Genesis console. It was the second gaming console that was purchased for me during my childhood (after the NES). I remember playing Sonic the Hedgehog for the first time and thinking the Genesis was the best console ever made (remember I was a kid). Over the next couple of years that feeling continued when I played games like Streets of Rage, Comic Zone, Vectorman, and a few games that I will mention later. The Sega Genesis was an amazing console and this compilation does a great job of reminding us why. However this compilation, as good as it is, is not perfect for a few reasons.

First, lets get the good points out of the way. Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection includes over 40 Sega Genesis games, many of which are indeed classics of the 16 bit era of gaming. Everything from the Sonic games, to the Phantasy Star games are present here. Even cult favorites like Ristar, Beyond Oasis, Dynamite Headdy, and so on are also here. The games themselves play as well as you remember them, but every once in a while you might notice some problems with the audio or little issues like that. None of these minor issues, which most people might not even notice, effect you enjoyment of the games. The individual games on this compilation are also very impressive, but is also ends up bringing us to one of the compilations biggest problems. This compilation has a great deal of overlap from the Sega Genesis Collection (PS2) and yet manages to to still not include many favorites.

Let me give you a better idea of what I am saying, below is a complete list of the games included in both the Sega Genesis Collection and Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection:

Sega Genesis Collection (PS2)

Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
Altered Beast
Bonanza Bros.

Super Thunder Blade
Sword of Vermilion

Now I did not include the unlockable games from each complilation as I just wanted to focus on the Sega Genesis games included on both compilation disks. If you look through each list you can clearly see how many games from the Sega Genesis Collection were carried over to Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. Personally I would not have an issue with this as long as some cult and fan favorites would have been placed on the Ultimate Genesis Collection. For example, where are the Toe Jam and Earl games, or Eternal Champions, or even Gunstar Heroes (keep in mind Sega owns the rights to Gunstar Heroes just like they own Dynamite Headdy). I mean why does Sega continue to included games like Flicky in just about every compilation they release but somehow decide to not include games like Toe Jam and Earl or other cult favorites. This is something I still find hard to understand.

In all fairness this is a minor complaint for what is otherwise an great collection of Genesis games. I think most people will agree the title "Ultimate" might not have been the best for this compilation but it is pretty close to that. Just be warned if you already have the Sega Genesis Collection for you PlayStation 2, you can for the most part skip this release as there is way too much overlap between both titles. However, if you don't have the Sega Genesis Collection, Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection is a 5 star release that is worth every cent.

One last thing, sorry for the very long review.

Lots of fun for all ages
This is a great games with so many games inside the game making it exciting, fun and very entertaining for hours and hours. I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys the fun of Sonic as well as many other games.

cool
This is a cool kids game. Has a few of the old skool games like Altered beast, sonic of course, kid cameloean, etc...me and my wife play all the time.

Retro game Lover :)
Exelente gaming quality !
Classic games from the old consoles and retro games:
one big thumbs up for Sonics ultimate colection.

Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection
I would recommend this game for anyone with a nostalgia craze. It's a great collection, nicely put together. Although, the games are much harder than I remember! If you're a fan of the old genesis games, this is a great buy. Otherwise, it will probably collect dust like your old Genesis.
